Flexible Production Schemes: Rapid Changeover Strategies for Multi-Size Collapsible Silicone Bowls
Today's market demands agility, with customers expecting a wide variety of SKUs in small batches. Efficiently managing this diversity in production is a major challenge. This article presents a flexible manufacturing strategy for producing multiple sizes of collapsible bowls from a single production line.
The popularity of collapsible silicone bowls in the food and outdoor markets has created a scenario where manufacturers must efficiently produce numerous sizes and colors, often in small lot sizes. Dedicated lines for each SKU are inefficient and capital-intensive. The solution lies in a flexible manufacturing approach that allows rapid changeovers to meet dynamic market demands.
TYM's strategy centers on modular mold design and adaptable automation. A single mold base can accommodate interchangeable cavity inserts, allowing quick switching between, for example, a 350ml and a 500ml bowl configuration. The injection molding machine's control system stores recipes for each variant, automatically adjusting parameters like shot size, injection speed, and cycle time at the push of a button.
The automation cell is designed for flexibility. A 6-axis articulated robot can be easily reprogrammed to handle different part geometries and place them into various packaging configurations. Quick-change tooling on downstream equipment, such as printing or packaging stations, further accelerates the switch. An integrated MES system tracks inventory and schedules, automatically preparing the line for the next production run. This agile setup enables manufacturers to respond swiftly to market trends, fulfill custom orders, and optimize inventory by producing only what is needed, when it is needed, without sacrificing efficiency.
